Details:

Isaac
October 5 – November 11, 2001
The sacrifice of Isaac, one of the richest and most troubling stories in the Bible, is given a stunning and provocative new interpretation by David Schulner, one of America’s fastest-rising young playwrights.  Isaac was developed at the Sundance Theater Lab, Lincoln Center, The Public Theatre and A Traveling Jewish Theatre.  ATJT brings you the West Coast Premiere.

Una Noche de Suenos vidi Flores – a dream of flowers
January 10 – February 10, 2002
Rich original music and intense physicality will infuse this cabaret-style new performance piece.  With new music written and sung by Albert Greenberg, dancers choreographed by Sonya Delwaide, and four performers on stage communicating bilingually in Ladino and English, this piece is going to be high-energy. Delwaide is new to ATJT, but she trained in New York City with Merce Cunningham and Twyla Tharp and has choreographed locally with ODC San Francisco and Berkeley Ballet Theater. In 2001, Ms. Delwaide won an Isadora Duncan award for best performance in her own work.

Borscht Belt by the Bay
February 14 – March 17, 2002 (Press Opening Monday, February 18)

A Traveling Jewish Theatre welcomes leading Bay Area humorists and vaudevillians to its stage for a first-rate Jewish comedy and variety series.   Last year’s performers included Sara Felder, Jeff Raz, Dan Rothenberg, Betsy Salkind and Lisa Geduldig.  This year’s show will have  new performers to spice up the cold months.

Song of Songs
April 11 – May 19, 2002 (Press Opening Monday, April 15)
Using the supremely sensuous language of Chana and Ariel Bloch’s new award-winning translation of one of the Bible’s most erotic books, Newman’s world premiere theatrical interpretation adds music and movement to bring to life two versions of passion—the fiery sexual awakening enjoyed by two young lovers and the individual soul’s spiritual longing for union with the Divine.

ATJT has brought its repertory to countries throughout Europe, Israel and North America and has collaborated with a wide variety of directors, dramaturgs and performers, notably Joseph Chaikin, Mira Rafalowicz, Martha Boesing and Mark Samuels.  Producing a constantly evolving body of work, ATJT  builds bridges across cultural divides.  A winner of numerous critical awards including the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, and honors from Drama-logue and the Bay Area Theater Critics Circle, ATJT won a lifetime achievement award from the National Foundation for Jewish Culture in 1999.  For more information on ATJT's Love and Betrayal Season, call 415-399-1809.
